Cookstown District Council
Environmental Health
Welcome to the Environmental Health Department
The Environmental Health Department is responsible for the provision of a range of services designed to maintain and improve the quality of the environment and to protect public health and safety.
The services can be divided into five core areas of work:
(a) Food Control (including Food Hygiene and Food Standards);
(b) Occupational Health and Safety
(d) Environmental Protection (including Pollution Control and General Environmental Health);
(e) Licensing and Regulatory Services ( including Dog Control)
Within these core areas the Department monitors and regulates the safety and composition of food supplied for human consumption, the standards of safety and welfare in a range of workplaces and the safety of goods supplied for general consumer use.
The Department also enforces a range of Environmental Protection legislation controlling such matters as noise, dusts, odours and general public health nuisances.
A Dog Licensing and Control Service is also provided along with the enforcement of miscellaneous Bye-Laws and statutory rules.
A considerable proportion of the Department's workload is based on the enforcement of Public Health and Environmental Protection legislation for which Council is statutorily responsible.
In addition the Department provides advice and information to a wide range of individuals and groups both informally and through formal consultation and training.
The Programme for Government agreed by the Northern Ireland Assembly identified the New Public Health Agenda as a primary driver in delivering public health services, both regionally and locally.
The Investing for Health Strategy identifies District Councils as a key partner in the delivery of health interventions and in the establishment of Investing for Health Partnerships.
The Environmental Health Department has already contributed to the establishment of these partnership working arrangements and hopes to now integrate the strategic aims of Investing for Health into its daily work programme
