Diet and Healthy Eating

What we eat plays a vital role in determining the state of our health. A good diet is essential for maintenance of good physical and oral health, and during pregnancy is important for the healthy development of the growing baby.

Poor nutrition and high cholesterol can contribute to coronary heart disease, some cancers, diabetes, raised blood pressure, obesity, asthma, osteoporosis and dental decay.

The relationship between diet and medical conditions is complex. Lower fat intake, increased consumption of foods which contain starch and fibre, (eg bread, cereals, potatoes, rice and pasta), and a reduction in salt are among recommendations for the prevention of these and other conditions which are influenced by diet.
