Littering

Everyone is aware of the unsightliness of litter on our streets and public roadways.  The Council spends hundreds of thousands of pounds each year cleaning our streets and public places and removing deposited litter.

It is an offence to deposit any waste material so as to cause litter. Such materials include fast food litter, cigarette litter, sweet wrappers, plastic bags, plastic/glass bottles to name but a few. The Council carries out regular monitoring programmes to identify and apprehend litter offenders.  If you are found dropping litter you could face a £80 Fixed Penalty Notice or a fine of £2,500 for more serious offences.

As part of the Education Programme, the Environmental Health Department runs regular Education Seminars, in conjunction with local primary schools and associated organisations, to ensure that all children are aware of the 'Don't Litter' message.
