Energy Efficiency in the Home.

It cannot be ignored that fuel poverty affects 40.6% of Mid-Ulster’s population. Our primary aim is to eliminate fuel poverty in the Cookstown district through a number of methods, mainly through:

Energy Efficiency Advice and information
Referral to the grant schemes being offered to improve home energy conservation
Oil Stamp Scheme and access to other financial assistance

Insulating your home can greatly improve the energy efficiency of your home. This will cut down on unnecessary heat loss very simply and effectively. You may even be eligible for a grant to insulate your home to start saving energy.

Top Tips to Save Energy

Turning down your thermostat by 1 degree can cut you bills by 10%.
Ensure all appliances are not left on standby as they continue to use 5% while on standby.
Close curtains and tuck behind radiators in order to keep heat in.
When buying white goods always check the energy rating. (A-G) A being excellent decreasing to G being the poorest.
Energy saving light bulbs use 20% less energy than standard bulbs and may last up to 12 times longer.
When a room is empty make sure the lights are turned off.
Only wash full loads in the washing machine, tumble dryers and dishwashers-that way you'll save on electricity, water, detergent and money.
Turn your Hot water cylinder thermostat down, it may be too hot.

Alternatively, please see information regarding the warm homes scheme below which may entitle you to a range of insulation measures or a possible new heating system. Cookstown District Council also acts as a referral agent to this scheme if you would like us to make an application on your behalf.

The Warm Homes scheme is funded by the Department for Social Development, administered by the Northern Ireland Housing Executive and delivered by Bryson Charitable Group throughout the Cookstown District.

The Scheme is open to home-owners and private tenants who are in receipt of a qualifying benefit or Tax Credit, these are:

Income Support; Income Related Employment Support Allowance; Income Based Job Seeker’s Allowance; Pension Credit; Child Tax Credit (with relevant income less than£16,190); Working Tax Credit; Disability Living Allowance; Attendance Allowance; Housing Benefit.

Under the Scheme, eligible applicants could receive a range of insulation measures: Loft Insulation, Cavity Wall Insulation and a Hot Water Tank Jacket. In addition heating measures are available to those who rely on Economy 7, Bottled Gas (LPG)or Solid Fuel to heat their home or those who have no heating system at all.
