Petroleum Spirit Licensing

Petrol-spirit licensing is undertaken in accordance with the provisions of The Petroleum (Consolidation Act) (NI) 1929.

Generally anyone wishing to keep petroleum-spirit in excess of 3 gallons (13.64 litres) must obtain a licence from the District Council. Petroleum-spirit is highly flammable and it is important therefore that its storage is strictly controlled. A licence is valid for a maximum period of twelve months and is subject to renewal.

How is an application made?

An application to the District Council should include an application form Petroleum Licensing Application (Word) or Petroleum Licensing Application (pdf)

The appropriate fee and an electrical certificate. If a new application is involved layout plans and other information will be required.

What fee is payable?

The fee payable is related to the quantity of petroleum-spirit to be kept. Details are as follows-

Quantity Fee not exceeding 2,500 litres £39.00. 

Exceeding 2,500 litres but not exceeding 50,000 litres £54.00.                

Exceeding 50,000 litres £111.00

What happens when an application is made?

We will inspect the premises and the applicant will be notified of any matters that may require attention. When the premises are found to be in order a licence will be issued.

What conditions are applicable to a petroleum-spirit licence when granted?

There are standard terms, conditions and restrictions upon and subject to which a licence is granted (these have been produced in booklet form by the District Council).
