WHAT IS COMMUNITY SAFETY?

Community Safety seeks to reduce crime, the fear of crime, anti-social behaviour and other factors that affect perceptions of safety and as a consequence quality of life.It is about delivering local solutions to local problems
BACKGROUND
In 2004 Cookstown District Council agreed to spearhead local efforts towards the establishment of a local partnership made up of elected representatives, professional officers from statutory and voluntary bodies and other relevant agencies as well as the community sector.
The Partnership carried out an audit of crime within the district which encouragingly demonstrated that relative to other areas Cookstown district experienced low levels of crime and indeed is a relatively safe place to live, work and visit. However after a number of planning days the Partnership agreed to adopt the following priorities based on PSNI statistics and community consultation:-
· Anti-social Behaviour
· Violent Crime
· Fear of Crime
The Partnership has agreed to concentrate their resources on the following
· Reduce anti-social behaviour throughout the district
· Reduce violent crime in the town centre at weekends
· Reduce fear of crime for youth and older people
· Raise awareness of the Community Safety Partnership (CSP)
Cookstown Community Safety Partnership has also drawn up an action plan for 2009 –2011.Through this action plan the following projects have been funded to help address the high priority issues detailed above
