Sports Development
In 1998 Cookstown District Council published its Strategy for the development of sport in the area. This Strategy, which has been widely acclaimed by the Sports Council for Northern Ireland provides for a collaborative and coordinated approach to sports development in the area harnessing the efforts of a wide range of partners.

The Strategy provides a clear focus and direction tailored around its main themes of:
Starting Well
Staying Involved
Striving for Excellence
Starting Well is about providing quality sporting opportunities for primary school aged children, getting it right at the start is the most effective way to increase participation.
Staying Involved is concerned with providing a range of accessible opportunities enabling as many people as possible to remain life long active participants in sport; our role is in providing opportunities based upon peoples needs.
Striving for Excellence aims to allow those who wish to reach their optimum level of achievement we are especially concerned with providing the correct pathways and opportunities for young people to excel.
Objectives
Cookstown District Council Sports Strategy goes on to detail five key objectives that underpin the work of the Sports Development Unit.
1. To increase participation in sport and physical recreation throughout the district.
2. To co-ordinate the delivery of training programmes for key people to help them face the challenges of his/her sport.
3. Help people to sustain their initial involvement with sport.
4. Build partnerships to improve communication, co-operation and co-ordination between all relevant organisations.
5. To ensure Cookstown District Council is at the forefront of Sports Development work within the Mid-Ulster area.
