Town Twinning

The role of the Twinning Committee is to increase understanding and co-operation between different countries through the organisation of exchange visits involving a range of people of various social, cultural, educational, economic and vocational backgrounds.

Cookstowns original twinning was with the Commune of St Plerin which is situated on the north coast of Brittany. The ties with St Plerin remain strong to this day. Longer serving members of the committee have established deep and lasting friendships with their opposite numbers in France and friendly exchanges outside the formal framework of the Twinning Committee are ongoing.

The members of the Twinning Committee visiting St Plerin are usually accompanied by people who represent the cultural richness of Cookstown District including Irish musicians and dancers, pipe bands and artists. The committee build on the good relationships fostered by these activities and Councillors in particular welcome the opportunity to compare notes with their opposite numbers. The traffic is not all one-way with groups from Plerin regularly visiting Cookstown whether they are school children, members of the Plerin Committee, dancers or musicians.

The Twinning Committee's evolution goes on as it nurtures links with other communities within mainland Europe including Holland, Germany, Poland and Romania. These links will grow closer over time as the Cookstown District shares the pleasures of other European cultures.
